FAQ
In Singapore's climate, whether solid wood lasts or fails comes down to moisture — below are the questions makers ask us most.
Q1. Will solid wood furniture crack in Singapore's air-conditioning?
It can — but cracking is a moisture problem, not bad luck, and it is preventable. Singapore swings from roughly 84% outdoor relative humidity to an air-conditioned interior that sits near 10–12% equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Wood is hygroscopic: it never stops moving toward balance with the air around it. Move a piece from a humid store into a dry AC room and it dumps moisture fast — the surface shrinks before the core, internal tension exceeds the bond between the fibres, and the board checks or splits. Three things decide whether it survives: the moisture baseline the wood starts at, the environment it is going into, and whether the joinery lets it move. Get one wrong and the other two will not save it.
Q2. What moisture content should furniture timber be in Singapore?
For an air-conditioned interior, target a 10–12% moisture content (MC) baseline. That range matches the EMC an AC room pulls wood toward. We measure imported temperate stock at 7–9% MC on arrival — below what an aircon interior wants, so it swells as it climbs to equilibrium. Local air-dried stock stalls at 15–18% MC because of our ambient humidity; that reads as “dry” but is a liability once the aircon goes on. The number that matters is not a claim on a label — it is a measured reading on your actual board. Ask for the MC. If a supplier cannot give you a number, they do not know it.
Q3. Isn't dried wood already stable?
No. Drying sets where the wood starts, not where it ends — it is a baseline, not a cure, because wood stays hygroscopic for life. The moment a dried board meets Singapore air, it starts moving toward equilibrium again. Real stability is three things working together: a baseline stabilised to 10–12% MC, matched to the room the piece will live in, and joinery engineered to let the wood move instead of tearing itself apart. Anyone selling “dried equals stable” is selling you half the answer.
Q4. Can I use local air-dried wood for furniture in an air-conditioned home?
You can, but not straight off the rack. Local air-dried wood stalls at 15–18% MC — too wet for an air-conditioned interior, which pulls wood toward a 10–12% EMC. Build at 18% and the board keeps shrinking after it is finished; that gap is where cupping, checking and failed joints come from. The species is not the problem — local hardwoods like Angsana, Suar and Khaya are honest, workable material. The moisture baseline is the problem. Bring it down to a 10–12% MC baseline, verify the reading on the actual board, and build with joinery that lets it move. Baseline, environment, movement — the same three, every time.
Knowing the numbers is one thing; building to them is another. That's what WD Custom Woodcraft does — furniture engineered for Singapore's moisture instead of fighting it. Book a consultation to talk through a commission.
