1. Species is a design choice

Makers and designers start their process by deciding on the wood species. Species is a design choice: colour, grain, the feel of the room, and how long you intend the piece to last. That decision comes first.
The error is the next question: “which species survives Singapore?” None survives on its own; none fails on its own. Survival is not an intrinsic property of the wood — it is a framework: a 10–12% MC baseline, a cut defined by how the plank was sawn from the log (quarter-, rift- or plain-sawn), an orientation aligned to the grain, and joinery engineered to move. 3. The Atmospheric Pendulum: why moisture beats species

Singapore’s ambient relative humidity averages ~84%. Air-conditioned interiors equilibrate to ~10–12% EMC. Wood is hygroscopic — it gains and loses moisture to match the room, for as long as it exists. In Singapore this happens daily, not just seasonally as in temperate regions. When it dumps moisture too fast, the result is Hygroscopic Shock: checking, cupping, splitting.
This happens to a “premium” species just as readily as to a “cheap” one. The species does not give you a free pass; the moisture state removes the gambling from the equation.
4. The baseline: 10–12% MC, not 15–18%

Air-drying in Singapore stalls at 15–18% MC — the ambient humidity will not let it go lower. Many importers call that “dry.” In a modern AC interior it is a liability: the board still has moisture to lose, and it loses it in your home. We stabilise timber to a 10–12% MC baseline — the same range an AC interior pulls wood toward (~10–12% EMC) — so the board is pre-shrunk to meet the room. A baseline is not a finish line. Stabilised wood still moves with the Atmospheric Pendulum. That is expected — and it is where the Artisan’s Framework shores up your design.
5. Choose the species — then make it survive
Species is your design decision, made at the onset: hardness, colour, grain, the emotion of the room, the years you intend it to last. There is no “humidity-proof” species — and you don’t need one.

6. For the finished piece: build it to move
Even correctly stabilised wood holds potential energy. A finished piece must let the wood move, so it breathes without tearing itself apart. Continue to stabilise the boards at each stage of production, so they settle toward a stable EMC. Design with grain orientation and movement always in mind. Use design (cut and grain orientation), joinery (floating panels, shiplapped panes, sliding dovetails, breadboard ends) and/or dynamic fasteners (Z-clips, figure-of-eight brackets, slotted screw or bolt holes) to mitigate expansion, contraction and warp.
